okay so, I saw this book on booktok like 5 times a day so obviously I bought it. I put it off for sooo long because these kinds of books are not what I normally read. Buuuuuuuutt I forced myself to start it thinking, whatever. If I don’t like it i’ll just dnf it.
Yeah let me tell you, that did not happen.
I started this and I just couldn’t put it down. Like literally, the book was stuck to my hands as if it was fastened with superglue.

This book is going to live in my head rent free for a VERY long time.

Evelyn Hugo is a character that I don't think I will ever be able to forget about and at times while reading I had to stop and remind myself that this is a work of fiction coz she felt like a real person. I felt like I was really reading someones biography and wow I don't think I can describe the feeling I got while reading the book, coz it is THAT good.

so heartbreaking yet extremely beautiful...
The seven lives of Evelyn Hugo has it all from scandalous lives in the 50s to the journey of love and hope. A truly depressing yet incredibly fascinating book.
Giving it 5 stars is a big understatement.

But in case anyone wants details, here are some things I loved about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

I liked how it was told in a kind of Titanic way, where the main character is looking back and telling her story, rather than it all happening in present time. When stories are told like this, the readers get to experience the character's emotions firsthand, while also receiving I was given this book this morning and finished it in the same day. That should tell you how much I loved this book. But in case anyone wants details, here are some things I loved about The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

I liked how it was told in a kind of Titanic way, where the main character is looking back and telling her story, rather than it all happening in present time. When stories are told like this, the readers get to experience the character's emotions firsthand, while also receiving commentary on what said character thinks of it now. I also liked how it wasn't a slow-burn romance. Don't get me wrong, I love a good slow-burn but I already knew that this book did not have a necessarily happy ending so I did not want the romance to be very drawn out, only for it to be ended just as Evelyn and Celia found each other. The author made the romance to raw and real, showing the good and the bad parts of the relationship. Celia was Evelyn's true love, but their relationship was no where near perfect. Celia was very jealous, and Evelyn cared about her fame and reputation almost too much. But there was so much good, and even though they both had years apart, they always came back to each other. They never put each other down. They (mostly) supported each other, and this was shown when Evelyn was filming the movie after she had Conner and Celia never complained that she was working too hard and never made her feel like she couldn't act as well after she was a mother. It was also so sweet when Celia told Evelyn she would support her decision to have a child with Harry and how involved she was in Conner's life. Their love was always so strong, and I feel like the years they spent together when they had both retired were the best because they did not need to hide who they were or have the stress of their careers.

Seven Husbands left me so unbelievably heartbroken, especially over Harry. If Celia was Evelyn's romantic soul mate, Harry was her platonic soul mate. I was glad that he got his happiness too, and I wish the author went more into detail about Harry and Evelyn's dynamic, and Harry in general. The parts where he was in the book were only when he was doing something of significance with Evelyn. I wish we got to see what normal life was like for them, especially how they got along on set. I did expect a lot more content of Evelyn on the set of her movies, whereas the book was almost entirely just about her personal life. I also wish Evelyn's culture and background were touched upon more, but I guess it makes sense that they weren't since Evelyn spent so much of her life trying to cover it up. I would have liked to have seen more moments of Evelyn with Conner too, but I'm glad that they were able to have a close relationship up until Conner died.

Evelyn was such a badass and she lived her life the way she wanted to right until the very end. I loved how unapologetic she was. She admitted to using her body to get what she wanted and she didn't regret it. This definitely is not the best example, but I have heard of so many similar things that actresses had to do to make it in that time period, and even today. She was such an icon and wasn't afraid to admit it. It was sad how she ended up committing suicide, but understandable, because she lived a full life and outlived almost everyone she cared about. I would have liked to have seen how her biography impacted the lives of the people in Hollywood and general society when it was released. I also liked how we saw how much Evelyn influenced Monique, even after knowing her for such a short time. Monique having the courage to get what she wanted and end her marriage was a nice detail that showed the readers that we can be impacted by people we barely know. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo had me non-stop reading (even when I should have been doing my homework), and I loved everything about Evelyn's story. ...more
