Marcel Proust started to write Jean Santeuil around 1896 and finally abandoned it by the end of 1899 before embarking on a completely different project of translating some of John Ruskin's works into French. Jean Santeuil was not published until 1952, thirty years after Proust's death, it was translated into English by Gerard Hopkins and published in 1956.
