This book was a deeply moving read. There were times I welled up with misty eyes, because the professional excellence and empathy expressed in the book were so inspiring.

It was opportune that I re-read this just as I was going to a school librarian conference & one of the speakers was Dr Chu reporting excellent results from his book battle program in Hong Kong.
As a parent and an educator I say yeah and amen to unencumbered reading by our students. And yet ... We still have the reluctant readers despite this philosophy and she too has to admit once the students pass through to another classroom they may not continue on the path she has set for them.

I can see what all of the buzz is about around this book. A book about reading that's actually FUN to read? Unheard of. But Miller's style of part teaching-memoir, part reading research, lots of student voice, and sparks of great ideas throughout make this an afternoon read that got me excited about going back to work after winter break!
