This is two books in one volume in my edition.
In "Painted Words" we meet Mari on her first day of school and quickly understand that she is new to English. Her teacher and classmates are supportive for the most part, but some days are hard and frustrating for her. She paints as a way to communicate. In "Spoken Memories" we hear the story behind Mari's paintings: how her family fled from famine and a war-torn country (it's not clear where).
