Pretty fascinating book that was creepy but had me on the edge of my seat. A family rents an Airbnb but the actual owners show up one night after a massive blackout has hit NYC but has not reached the countryside. What then transpires is a slow realization that the world has changed drastically but no one knows how much because of lack of internet and phones. I loved it as a discussion opener but not as much as a piece of literature. The characters seemed shallow to me and the esoteric language felt pretentious. I appreciate double checking word meanings here and there but the author's language choices didn't deepen the descriptions so they didn't hit me as authentic. Still, there is a lot in this novel that connects to our current world situation - a semi-quarantine setting, unknown threats, and inter-racial relationships. Certainly a good choice fo ...more

Interesting premise and great start, touched on all sorts of ideas of race and class and wealth and priorities and then it just didn’t really go anywhere and then it ended.
