Pretty fascinating book that was creepy but had me on the edge of my seat. A family rents an Airbnb but the actual owners show up one night after a massive blackout has hit NYC but has not reached the countryside. What then transpires is a slow realization that the world has changed drastically but no one knows how much because of lack of internet and phones. I loved it as a discussion opener but not as much as a piece of literature. The characters seemed shallow to me and the esoteric language felt pretentious. I appreciate double checking word meanings here and there but the author's language choices didn't deepen the descriptions so they didn't hit me as authentic. Still, there is a lot in this novel that connects to our current world situation - a semi-quarantine setting, unknown threats, and inter-racial relationships. Certainly a good choice fo
