Already looking forward to book 2! This magical adventure ended in a solid place with the characters all on impressive narrative arcs and the world of Orisha and it's magical pantheon slowly being revealed. ...more

I so wanted to love this book!!! What others have called world building, I found tedious details that did not forward the story. As well, I did not find any of the characters particularly likable or relatable. Even the outstanding storytelling abilities of Bahni Turpin could make this mess palatable. Listening was an absolute chore, and I was too stubborn to mark this as did not finished. Definitely the biggest disappointment of 2018 for me. :-(

This is a wonderful book and completely meets and exceeds the hype. I cannot wait for the film- and the sequel. There is so much going on- forbidden magic, repression, self-discovery, being othered, fighting for equal rights. Or indeed any rights at all.

This thick fantasy novel has lots of action but didn't grab me. I'm in the minority on loving this - I'm sure it will be popular with our teens and tweens. My issue with was the writing and some language that felt too modern for the setting as well as some spots where the actions didn't match what was happening in my head. There were several times when I was pulled out of the flow of the story because of phrases that didn't feel authentic.

I hated when this book ended. I'm hooked on finding out how the lives of the complex characters unwind. Set in a rich fantasy world set in Africa, this epic tale is full of adventures, complex characters with internal and external challenges, forbidden love, and magic. I look forward to Adeyemi's next book! ...more
