This story absolutely gripped me, and I couldn't put it down. Two light-skinned black twins from a town where everyone is light-skinned leave home and head out to be in the world. One twin leaves again and goes on to pass as white for the rest of her life while the other twin has a baby who is much darker and returns to their small town. This is my favorite book so far this year, and I cannot imagine it not being my favorite book of 2020. It’s a masterpiece. It’s about so many things - but essentially, to me, it’s about what we take with us and what we leave behind. New beginnings. The impossibility of outrunning the past. The endless possibilities of the future. All of this couched within a narrative that addresses racism, poverty, abuse, queerness, colorism. Magnificent.

This was a gorgeous read from start to finish. The story is based around the lives of two extremely fair African-American twins and the divergent life paths that they chose. There are so many insights into racism and colorism but this is not a pedantic book, this is about a cast of related characters who are all fully realized. I feel in love with each one in turn.

A fascinating story that shed light on aspects of colorism and racial identity that I didn't know much about and hadn't thought about.

Really enjoyed this speed read about twin sisters who run away from home at age 16. They look white but are of black heritage. The sisters split up after some time and become estranged . One of them stays true to her roots and the other lives as a white woman. Both work through various issues around their identities, as do their young adult daughters.
