A very cool book, but I kept comparing it Orphan Master's Son (2013) and it was definitely second place to that gem. I'm surprised that the Pulitzer committee would pick two such similarly-themed books just three years apart. ...more

An intelligent book, rich in vocabulary and philosophy and history and psychology, The Sympathizer holds readers at a distance. While I felt horror and revulsion during the scenes fashioned to evoke such feelings (rape and torture scenes), I couldn't feel sorry for the nameless narrator, even as he agonized over the assassinations he was compelled to perform or his status as a lonely outsider.
