This is the Newberry Medal winner, deservedly so. It’s a unique, moving story about a 7th grade Korean-American girl and her family who move in with their grandmother, a Korean immigrant to America and the glamorous and beloved town eccentric. Themes of loss, friendship, family, belonging, starting over (and how impossible that sometimes is), and learning about yourself from the lens of where your came from loom large. Really enjoyed this year's Newbery winner for middle grade students. The deep connection to Korean stories, folklore, food and culture is gorgeous, and the moving between reality and magic was done so well.
