This is a beautiful graphic novel that mixes culture, fairytales, family love, and emerging sexuality into a cohesive story. A Vietnamese mother and her son share fairytales and these become mirrors for some of the issues they are each dealing with: being away from one's homeland, being separated from one's love, and loving someone of the same gender. Gorgeous graphic novel that combines a boy's coming-of-age understandings with two Vietnamese fairy tales. These versions of Cinderella and The Little Mermaid are elegant and dramatic with gruesome details. A bold and lovely book. ...more
