Could this really be a first novel for Angie Thomas ? This book is the work of a gifted storyteller, and I look forward to reading more of her work. I appreciate the skilled way in which she introduces the characters, seamlessly weaving them into the narrative. I read this book on the tails of All American Boys by Jason Reynolds "All American Boys", and was struck by how "The Hate U Give" offers more complex, female perspective to the challenges that come with living in a world where police brutality, racism, and violence are ...more

Starr has a very unique voice—she comes alive on the page and her narration of events and her emotions is very real. This is a powerful book about identity, perceptions, and the truth. I think adults would benefit from reading this book (it’s geared to high school students).

Intense and powerful book about living two lives: the poor neighborhood Starr lives in that is rife with family and neighborhood violence and the private school she goes to where she is one of only a few black students. Lots to learn from this book.

An important book with a solid plot and characters that the reader can believe. ...more

A must read. And thank you to Angie Thomas and We need diverse books for allowing these voices to be heard ...more
