I found this quite difficult to read from a style point of view - I’m not sure why Sally Rooney doesn’t use grammatical conventions, but it sure makes it harder to read when you can’t quite tell where speech ends and narration begins, and vice versa.

The story itself was quite a familiar one - boy and girl circling around each other, will they, won’t they, etc. I started getting bored of the dance of Connell and Marianne were having around each other, and it felt like it ended quite abruptly with

Marianne is rich and very unpopular while Connell is poor and very popular. Both are very smart though and start a secret romantic relationship in school, one that they will keep returning to during their university studies...

I suppose because of the popularity of the Tv adaptation, I went into this book with high expectations. Unfortunately, they were not met at all.
