I found this quite difficult to read from a style point of view - I’m not sure why Sally Rooney doesn’t use grammatical conventions, but it sure makes it harder to read when you can’t quite tell where speech ends and narration begins, and vice versa.

Marianne is rich and very unpopular while Connell is poor and very popular. Both are very smart though and start a secret romantic relationship in school, one that they will keep returning to during their university studies...
