Such a very different voice from Calvino, a writer I've long admired for his experimentalism and playful imagination. Little of that is on display in this memoir of his youthful experiences on the fringes of World War II. But one of the three short stories that make up this book shows glimpses of his unique talent. Calvino completists should definitely read this book, and fans of World War II history could appreciate this unusual perspective of the war.
