"Don’t take away half of me so you can fit me into a box"

This book is about to subtle nuances and intense complexities of love and ambition. It's about a flawed character that you don't exactly root for, but someone that you can't help but wish to follow, to understand, to know. The book presents a world of stardom and fame that is completely foreign to the reader, and offers a raw insight into a life that is dark and relatable.

This book is about to subtle nuances and intense complexities of love and ambition. It's about a flawed character that you don't exactly root for, but someone that you can't help but wish to follow, to understand, to know. The book presents a world of stardom and fame that is completely foreign to the reader, and offers a raw insight into a life that is dark and relatable.

I struggle to believe that the contents of this book aren't real, that I didn’t just read Evelyn's biography. Because despite the glamour, the dramatic events, the seven marriages, it somehow felt so rooted in reality. This book is powerful, in even its small statements. In the way it depicts truth and motivations, in the way family is portrayed as being abstract and love diverse. It is moving. It is sad. It is empowering. And it is unbelievably real, despite being complete fiction.

"I think that loving you has been the truest thing about me"

Often, I found myself completely lost within the pages, wishing above all, that the story truly was based upon a true life. This story isn't pure by any means, but the love, between the core group of characters is. And it was that, those ties and bonds that I rooted for.

I sense that this book will be one that I continue to refer back to as having changed my life for years to come. This book taught me that epic love isn’t always romantic. That immoral decisions can be justified. I learnt that a person can be truly whoever they want to be as long as the truth doesn’t drift too far away.

I can't recommend this book enough. Whilst the title almost defines Evelyn by her husbands, the story itself shows the life of a person who refuses to be anything other than her own creation. She is constantly defining herself, reinventing and finding her own truth, whilst maintaining a false being she had hand crafted. It is empowering, the way in which men attempt to use her, whilst they fall into her palm and become a weapon in which she is able to wield against the world. This story is about finding power, when the world is unwilling to offer it. It is finding love, and living a life unconventional but worth living. ...more
