First rate five star read! A must read for everyone! Outstanding character development, exceptional background creativity and a general delight to read. I laughed, I cried, I celebrated all the moments of each flawed individual. I will be buying this book and her others plus I will now read The Girl Who Chased the Moon on my shelf. Exceptional Author, Sarah Addison Allen! Perfect book for a book club to discuss too!
This was my second SAA book, read right after The Girl Who Chased the Moon and just like that book, it was a lovely, made me cry real tears at the end of the book kind of story. I just loved it and I love how SAA spins her yarn and winds up everything happily ever after at the end. I like that. I think I realize that more and more now after reading. I now have Garden Spells sitting in my to read pile. It's already here. I'm going going to push it down a few books though and save it as long as I

I'm not one to try to predict movies or books because I like surprises and I like to watch/read how the story unfolds. Granted I do pick up on some clues along the way, but some I just leave behind. I was pleasantly surprised with the ending. Beautifully written.
I love the style of Allen's writing. I would much rather read third person point-of-view than first person. Her characters are well developed, and I like how the female characters start as weak, or hardened by whatever, and they become s ...more

The edition of Sugar Queen I read is an Advance Reader copy. Once I got past all the editing mistakes (and there are a lot), I loved this book.
In the same brilliance Sarah Addison Allen wrote Garden Spells, comes this book filled with unexpected friendships, turmoil family relationships, mysterious romance, and just a hint of magic in the air. Oh and ending! It's so rare that I love an ending to a book; and this one I did.
Brilliant book. Can't wait to read Sarah Addison Allen's other novels. ...more

bumping my rating to 3.75ish I finished this as a reread and it was just what I needed. Still as charming as I remembered. I enjoyed revisiting this little N. Carolina town and loved that everyone got a happt ending. Technically I listened to this book as a book on tape. Can't say that I'd rave about it but it was a nice light read, I enjoyed some of the touches of magical realism in the story but I do have to say some of the plot points were obvious almost from the beginning. Still I found it a

This book was just as enjoyable as Aleen's other 2. I hope she continues to write such fun books.

4 and a half. I thought this book might be a disappointment as so many second books have been when I adored the first book, but this book was just as delightful, if not more than her first, Garden Spells. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes a little magic, a little romance, a little drama. Perfect blend.
I think Sarah has become a favorite writer.I've loved both of her books so far. I hope she continues with her magical, mystical romances. They're fun.
