After spending her whole life being the doting daughter, Josey knew she had to make up for her childhood, she wanted something for herself, mainly the mail man Adam, but didn‘t think that would ever happen. Waking up to find Della Lee in her closet changed more than just her eating habits (Josey had a secret stash of candy in the double size closet), it changed how she remembered her father, her relationship with her mother and the whole town. Della Lee had a way about her, she brought together ...more
I love Sarah Addison Allen, and I loved The Sugar Queen almost as much as I loved Garden Spells and much more than what I've read of her other novels, even though I managed to figure out a major plot twist pretty early in. Despite the minor element of predictability the rest of the book was excellent.
One thing I DIDN'T like is how Josey Cirrini is described as being unattractive so much early on, but after she starts dressing better and wearing makeup the other characters consider her pretty. Th ...more

I'm not sure if I was just in the right mood or what but I loved this book. The story is implausible and the ending, well, happily ever after but I really adored the three main characters, Josey, Chloe and Della Lee. They were all women who just needed to be "woken up" to their potential and then they were fighters who helped each other through the events of the book, even though one of them mysteriously never leaves Josey's closet.

Sarah Addison Allen has a special talent for immediately drawing you in, and putting you under her spell. "The Sugar Queen" (as are all of her books) is a real treat. Her characters are genuine and relatable. Her stories are unique and full of surprises. I read her books one-after-the-other. She is indeed "that good".
I anxiously look forward to her next book, "The Peach Keeper", due out in March 2011.

This book was such a pleasure to read, I devoured it right away. With a touch of charm, warmth, wit and a dash of magic only Sarah Addison Allen can deliver.
I loved the mystical modern fairy tale of a young woman with secret passions, secret treats and as she soon discovers family secrets that ultimatly change her course in life. A seed is planted in Josey's broke down soul and she blooms to life. Finding what makes her who she is while finding friends for life she never knew she could have. ...more

This was a nice find. Found at a Border's table sale and really enjoyed the book. I liked the fact that the main character who you think is desperately in need of a backbone is probably the person who is the strongest of all. The near-end of the book surprised which I always enjoy. I love Addison's sense of fun and magic. An enjoyable light read.

This, just like ll of Allen's books are wonderful reads, sprinkled with just a kiss of magic. I've loved everyone and this one as well.
