I really like Sarah Addison Allen. I've read almost all of her other books and I have liked every one of them! They are mostly just normal fiction but there is always a little element of magic in them that I love. She makes magic seem possible in the real world, which is my opinion it is. The Sugar Queen is about a woman named Josey who is dealing with a lot of difficult issues. She lives at home as a servant to her mother, basically, and tries to make up for being a terrible child. After reading Garden Spells, I was anxious to get my hands on anything else written by Sarah Addison Allen. The Sugar Queen was a quaint afternoon read. It wasn’t on the same level as Garden Spells by any means, but Allen’s writing style is quick and easy going. I like the alternating change of perception by the characters. Another great read. While this book is written in the same vein as Garden Spells, her first novel, Sarah Addison Allen finds a new take on love found and love lost. Plus there's a wonderful twist at the end.

My favorite thing about Sarah Addison Allen's books? The way food is a character in its own right, that it is a motivator, an expression of emotion, more than just sustenance.
