When the newest book by Sarah Addison Allen was released, I waited impatiently for a week and a half until my reserved copy came into the library. The brand new copy showed up all shiny and lovely, except for a strange sticky residue on the bottom left corner of the front cover that no amount of scrubbing would eliminate. Her first two novels, _Garden Spells_ and _The Sugar Queen_ were both devour-in-one-sitting delights. However her third book, _The Girl Who Chased the Moon_, failed to live up to the expectation I held for it. It read like a disappointing echo of teen supernatural romance-esque fluff to me, and just didn't have the depth or captivation that her first two novels held. I am pleased to say that she returns to her best tricks in The Peach Keeper, turning out a book that is both pleasingly different from what she has written before, and still retains the best sparks of magic.

The first few pages of this novel are available to read on Sarah Addison Allen's website, and if that isn't enough to capture your attention and draw you into the gorgeous, dripping-with-magic style, then the book just isn't for you. But there are plenty of peaches to go around for the rest of us.

Other reviewers have called Sarah Addison Allen's novels "comfort food for the soul." Like so many comfort foods, I wound up devouring this novel far far too quickly. There's something magical about Sarah Addison Allen's writing, and The Peach Keeper follows that path.

While romance is always a nice, comforting theme in Allen's books, this book also dealt with friendship - the kind that lasts and the bonds that women can make together. A bit of a mystery, a touch of magic, the charm of the setting - all these combine to make The Peach Keeper another on my list of comfort books to read on that rainy day.

so far- I'm loving this. Looking forward to the drive to and from work!

This was a great book to listen to. It took a bit to get used to the way the narrator read, but in the end it added to the experience. I look forward to more from Allen. ...more

Allen uses the perfect mixture of 'magic', humor & character development to make you fall in love with the characters. This time S. A. A. brings us into the world of a small town called Walls of Water. While the name sounds magical, this book fell short in the fun mysticism area that her first two books brought. It was still a good read for me because I loved the characters... the Stickman, the Joker, the Princess & the Freak- extreme names for likable people.
