So this was better than the first book, but I actually liked Alina less. And I'm not sure why. I think it might be because Nikolas came onto the stage and wiped the floor from everybody with his amazing character. Compared to him, Alina was just a whiny, annoying child.

2.5 stars but rounded up. Better than the first book (S&B had an original premise but bad follow-through) but still not fab. Warning: occasional spoilers below.

I enjoyed observing how Alina, despite her blandness, started integrating into the Grisha world. Lots of fun action, especially at the beginning, and Nikolai was a nice addition. But on to where we all know this is going…

BUT WAIT… I’m not that mad about it. Actually I understood where Leigh was going with it. Mal went from wonderful, golden boy to angsty, unlikable dickwad because… he’s human. I get it tbh: naive teenage boy with raging hormones watches his best friend (and love of his life apparently) leaving her old life - and him - behind. They were two peas in a pod their entire life and they’ve finally admitted feelings for each other. “Strong feelings” according to the TV show version. AbsoLUTEly he’s jealous, afraid, insecure, selfish... He can’t comprehend the full extent of Alina’s extraordinary power and feels her slipping away into a world he can’t be a part of. He feels displaced and REplaced. So he copes with his emotions by drinking, gambling, and fighting and it all just crumbles from there.

Plus NEITHER of them are capable of communicating with each other, creating all the problems in the first place. Seriously, I can give you the name of a therapist I recommend. It was too dragged out.

Look, it doesn’t mean it’s healthy but it’s life. I mean do readers expect all LIs to be the same? I decided not to give up on him at the end, going into the third book. I almost did though.

What does actually piss me off is that Leigh keeps trying to blur the line with The Darkling. He’s evil. Let him be evil. We all know he doesn’t have a redemption arc and he and Alina don’t fit no matter how sexy he may be. They won’t end up together. Let’s get over it and move on.

Mal is so insecure and annoying. It's a shame because I kind of liked him as a character in the first book. But this was the most middle-book syndrome-ish book to ever exist. It was all very filler and I wish we had more drama or any kind of progression whether it be with the characters or any kind of plot progression. ...more
