Wow. What an amazing rendition.
I did not expect to feel as much as I did, it was heartrending. This is the definition of "Walk a mile in their shoes, and then you'll understand their pain and motivation".
This was as much about Starr's process through grief and PTSD as it was about the injustice of what happened, and how she was able to survive and grow stronger with the help and support of her family, friends, and the community of her town.
And it wasn't just one-sided. There were the bad cops(o ...more

Starr’s dad said that names are important, and this is so true for her—she definitely shines bright, just like a star, even in the darkness surrounding her. Especially in the darkness. I love that she was able to find her voice through the course of this story—voices are a powerful weapon, as she learns. This was such a heavy and hard read (I had to switch to an audio recording for many chapters), but it’s so worth it.

I don't have anything negative to say about this book. I felt every emotion while reading this very real story. I'm just speechless...

Unbelievable, this book. Hooked me from the very beginning. It is so apropos for what's happening in our country now, it could be a new story. Very pwerful ...more

This was excellent. Starr reminds me so much of some of my friends from middle and high school. They not only struggled with the normal teenage angst of trying to figure out who they are and where they fit, but they also had to deal with keeping up two personalities like Starr did when she was with her friends from school and her friends and family at home. I know that happened with some of my friends because I saw it first hand, they were taunted because of the music they like or who they dated

Starr's story is one that will grab you and shake you until you understand what it is like to be a black girl in today's society. There were times while reading this that I felt uncomfortable because I saw things that I do as a person that I shouldn't. Ultimately, we can all improve on how we act and things we assume, but we need someone to tell us first hand how it affects the lives of others, and this book does that. We see the world through Starr's eyes, and even she is not without fault. We

Such an amazing story.
And a story we need so desperately right now.
I am almost speechless.
I cannot wait for the movie to come out.
It already looks like it does it justice.
I did actually see a preview for this movie at the theater which made this a little spoilery but the book was so good I didn’t even care
