[close] This story is a realistic fiction about a little girl named Allie, who wants to do nothing but play basketball with the new ball purchased by her father. In the story, Allie practices shooting her basketball at the park, and tries to join the boys in their game of basketball. Since Allie is a beginner basketball player she is not as good as the boys, so they reject her because of her lack of skills, and because she is a girl. This does not get Allie down, she continues to practice throughout the day, and eventually the other boys want to join Allie's basketball game. The illustrations in this story are amazing, and diverse! The children in this story are of all different races and ethnicities.

Allie's Basketball Dream was one of the top books I enjoyed reading. The genre of the book is fiction and I would recommend reading it for a 3rd grade level. It related to me personally because I used to LOVE playing basketball, however around the neighborhood I lived it, it was not the girl thing to do. Like Allie, I was picked on for not starting off as good as the boys were and many of the girls preferred to do other things such as hula hoop. However, she didn't give up.
