p.197 Dr. Finch rationalizing that most of the south only wanted to preserve their unique identity during the Civil War.

scout has luxury of doing as she pleases; also naive thinking that state rights is the real issue at stake with desegregation. Also a cop-out that scout will never "understand men" as states multiple times.

The many involved reviews say it all. This book was written first and never published with good reason. To Kill a Mockingbird is far more interesting and entertaining, but this book challenges every thing Scout and we know about her father. It brings home the "gentile" racism of the 1950's Southern Whites who thought they supported equal rights.
