Ok, here we go. I am not at all mentally prepared to write a review for this book, so pardon me if this goes downhill VERY quickly. Trust me, the moment I get to the characters I will die. Oh wait, I do characters first. GREAT.

And just like that I was left Shooketh! JUST LIKE THAT! I have no words to describe Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo! No words! It was just this exhilarating thrill ride of a novel that left me as hooked as I was breathless. My heart flipped in my chest as Bardugo's words hit me in the face with all its grace and beauty. This was a major step up from the Grisha Trilogy that didn't excite me at all and I am exuberant to read more in the sequel of Crooked Kingdom

Six of Crows is a novel that incorporates the signature Russian Folklore Bardugo intertwines in most of her works with a well-built mystery and intrigue that is sure to keep readers hooked. Main character, Kaz Brekker is a young criminal prodigy who has been offered wealth beyond even his wildest dreams but to get to millions of dollars he needs to assemble a dangerous gang of six of the deadliest crooks in the city of Ketterdam to retrieve a priceless item from the impenetrable Ice Court.

Can I just say how precious this novel is in terms of the relationships we see between each character towards each other? It’s something we don’t see that often and we should see it more often in YA Fantasy novels and just Young Adult in general. Also another thing I found amazing that surprised me a lot was how there was not much of an emphasis (or no emphasis really) on romance between any of the characters. It was definitely a much needed break that I appreciated a lot given that romance is usually heavily loaded on the plate called a YA novel.

Additionally everything flowed. I usually read 50 pages per hour and never once was I deathly bored. Every chapter had a new revelation or development. Me, myself having done NaNoWriMo was impressed at how Bardugo kept this fast paced storyline to keep the reader immersed in the story and entertained. This was impressive given that the novel is 492 pages long!

My only real negative was that I fear I might have read the pages over too quickly (I might have read 392 pages in a day which is sort of unheard of from me!) but I don’t think that really took anything away from the storyline really.

All in all a great read from Leigh Bardugo and I’m excited to read more!

I get the hype now. i get why everyone love this book.
Because it is brilliant.
Going from the Grisha trilogy to this is just amazing.
Leigh Bardugo is just an amazing writer.
Grisha trilogy was easy kind of read that is wow but Six of Crows is just like wow on another level.
Like you don't expect it coming after reading the Grisha trilogy.

Six of Crows is definitely worth the hype. Atleast, in my opinion. This duology is a great redemption to the Grishaverse. I can hardly believe its written by the same author. The world building and plot line was captivating and intriguing. I love the Crows. They each bring depth to the story. I grew attached to all of them. And I love their backstories. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel Crooked Kingdom. ...more

6 beloved "crows-not-stars"...

This re-read was inspired by my binge of the Netflix series that premiered April 23rd. I was feeling a little bittersweet about the Dregs getting sidelined in favour of the Alina Starkov/Darkling plot, so I figured I'd wallow in the miracle that is Six of Crows.

After two previous attempts to read this book, I finally was able to finish it on my third try. I'll be honest, just from the description, I would not have checked out/bought this book. The snippet inside the book flap is just not enticing enough and I seriously dislike books that have way too many POVs. The most I can do without getting irritated is three, but this book had EIGHT. But, the cover is gorgeous and I loved how my version of Six of Crows had black rims along the pages. The biggest reason why I gave this book three stars is because of the poor introduction, the lack of explanations on what's what, the name dumps, and the failure to flesh out all the characters evenly.

I absolutely hated the introduction. I know I'm not alone on this, because several people also seem to dislike the beginning or are confused. When reading the first 30% of the book, I felt like I was missing something. This didn't feel like the first book of a series. There were so many names without introductions, terms and slangs that held no importance to me, but should've, and a magical universe where I had no clue what was what! This was written for those readers who had already been exposed to the Grishaverse first introduced in the Shadow and Bone trilogy. I had read the first installment of that trilogy a long time ago, so everything in Six of Crows made almost no sense.

I just don't like the Grishaverse. The concept is cool, but I was never really able to buy into it. Like I mentioned before, I read Shadow and Bone but could not push myself to read the second two because I could sense that things were going to get really annoyingly complicated. This book was no exception. I couldn't buy into the Grishaverse.

Okay, another reason why this book has three stars is because of Jesper and Wylan. Was there a point? I would've loved to see so much more of their relationship, but we're only shown so little. And the bits we do see are confusing, because it's like, where did this relationship come from? Where did the interest come from?? At what point did these two start showing interest in each other??? They had very little screen time and were written more as side characters rather than main characters. Ms. Bardugo, more of Jesper and Wylan please, because it could've been really great. But instead, every time these two characters pop up, I'm left wanting Kaz, Inej, Nina, and Matthias.

On the contrary, I enjoyed Nina and Matthias' relationship A LOT. I think I would've given this book five stars if it had just been told from Nina and Matthias' perspective. I loved seeing their relationship in the flashbacks and in present day. It's a true haters-to-lovers story, but Bardugo made it believable! The two had to rely on each other to survive and that reliance grew into affection. It was such a wonderful portrayal of the haters-to-lovers trope and I seriously wish Bardugo would write just an entirely separate book for Nina and Matthias.

Also, Nina is just so badass. I loved her so much! She was my favorite character in every single way. She's the real MVP, to be honest.

I liked the plot a lot too! It was basic- here's the mission. Complete it and get the money. But, Bardugo was able to weave a basic plot into something so much more intricate and deep. There were so moments near the end where I gasped, because I hadn't seen it coming! There's little to no plot holes and I loved all the realistic hiccups in Kaz, Jesper, Inej, Wylan, Nina, and Matthias' journey. ...more
