Starr’s dad said that names are important, and this is so true for her—she definitely shines bright, just like a star, even in the darkness surrounding her. Especially in the darkness. I love that she was able to find her voice through the course of this story—voices are a powerful weapon, as she learns. This was such a heavy and hard read (I had to switch to an audio recording for many chapters), but it’s so worth it.

It's not worth the 5 stars I'd given it earlier.

I'm not saying that it's bad, it's average. The writing is bland and the characters are one dimensional. The combination is not something I like.

“What's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?”

This review might get deep because I feel like there's so much I have to say.
What can I say? This book has so much power and pain in it.
When reading this book, I got anxious and nervous. It crazy how we all kind of knew where the book is going to end up. Because we have seen it, heard it and talk about it. It's something all of the society is aware of.

I can definitely see why this book was hyped up. It seemed like this was the most talked about book in all of 2017 with even John Green saying that it was stunning. Now having read it… a year later in 2018, and definitely behind on the hype, I can see why people loved it.
