I had to read this for school this past year, and I’m going to be honest here, I used Sparknotes’ word for word translation for all of the it. Overall the story was good, i enjoyed it. The language Shakespeare uses, however, makes it very difficult to understand which is why a recommend using Sparknotes’ translator. We all know the story ends with Romeo and Juliet both killing themselves. There are many I marked this as spoilers even though most people know the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet. The language Shakespeare uses, however, makes it very difficult to understand which is why a recommend using Sparknotes’ translator. We all know the story ends with Romeo and Juliet both killing themselves. There are many things about the book I’d like to point out but here are some random reasons I gave it 3 stars.

They’re so young:
Romeo and Juliet are both literally my age and they are married. Not only that, but the whole Romeo x Juliet timeline took place over a matter of days.

The adults are basically useless:
The Capulets and Montague’s have teenagers and they let them run around Verona and do basically whatever they want. Neither sets of parents had any idea about their children’s lives outside of what they told them. We barely even have present parent figures for Romeo, I think they speak like twice. Juliets father was very demanding of Juliet, like when he tried to force her to marry Paris, even though she was married to Romeo (not that he knew that because ONCE AGAIN the parents are clueless). Juliets mother is barely there, she’s basically concerned about getting Juliet married. I’ve already mentioned Romeos barely there parents. This leaves the Nurse and the Friar, who were basically their parent figures. The Friar was good to Romeo, he helped Juliet when Romeo was banished.

The Nurse:
My final issue was with the nurse. In my opinion she was very two faced with Juliet. In the first half she was supportive of her and Romeo, helping them. But when he murders Tybalt, she completely turns on Romeo in front of Juliet causing her to now hate the nurse as well. After the nurse turns on Romeo, Juliet basically becomes ready to kill herself and has to turn to Friar for help.

THE FRIAR IS THE ONLY GENUINE GOOD ADULT IN THIS BOOK ...more

Gostei muito mais do livro do que eu imaginei, já sabia mais ou menos a história mas é bem mais do que só o romance que eu conhecia. Simplesmente amei, é isto. :)

Like a number of people, this was my first Shakespeare play to read. I re-read this play this year with my 9th grade students. Reflecting on the drama, the best part about the play is the myriad of iconic lines. For example, the first lines of the prologue or the lines from Romeo and Juliet in the balcony scene. The drama give readers (and students) a number of topics to discuss that remain relevant to this time period.

A delightful read! While discussing this book with a friend, I realized that it was much more then a teenage love story. It was fascinating to unravel all the inner meanings. Recommend reading.

This is another book I probably wouldn’t have started or finished if we hadn’t read it in school. Buuuut, I’m glad we did because it was an absolutely amazing story.
