I finally sat down and read this book this weekend. The tales are true--it reads really quickly. Unless, like me, you get lost in the haunting illustrations that kept me mesmerized for minutes on end. His artistry is masterful and nearly overwhelmingly powerful. His story is heart breakingly bleak, his ability to keep himself together and find a life of happiness and love through art is awe inducing and as inspirational a tale as I have ever heard. I've never been a fan of graphic novels but this one grabbed me and didn't let me go. The author is a children's book illustrator and in "comic book" form narrates the harrowing story of his childhood and how after he was operated on for cancer, he woke up with no voice and a row of stitches on his neck. I think this a good bet for book groups, especially if they have never done a graphic novel. Books for Lunch group, what do you think?
