I have long been fascinated with Russia. Russian dissenters have long been my heroes going all the way back to Alexander Solzhenitsyn up to Pussy Riot and Garry Kasparov. It feels like Russia has an inferiority complex. The government is always trying to look bigger and stronger than they really are. Thus the arms buildups, the Olympic obsession, the meddling. ‘Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World’s Greatest Nuclear Disaster” by Adam Higginbotham is a remarkable well-researched book about the history of the Chernobyl Atomic Energy Station site. It begins with the blueprint planning and goes forward through the construction and the daily life and biographies of many of the managers, engineers, general workers and their families. I recently watched the HBO miniseries "Chernobyl" and even though this occurred in my lifetime, I found I did not know much about this event. This book gives an excellent history of the rise of nuclear energy, particularly as it developed in the Soviet Union. I had no idea of the other accidents that occurred, except for Three Mile Island. I also learned a lot about nuclear reactors and void co-efficients which was fascinating. The author steps through the disaster as it unfolded and provides a ...more
