I found the 1988 first edition of this book at a used book shop while on holiday, and spent some days on the beach absorbed in it. Although the concepts in the book have been around for years now, it was interesting to read Hawkings take on the history of science and human thought. He lost me a bit when he started to get into quantum mechanics, but one can't expect all the complex sciences to be easily summarized by one person in one book. I have to be honest I was expecting a much easier, no a freer flowing read that what this actually was, given how much people rave about this book. Yes Hawking explains some very complicated theories in more simplistic terms than normal but this still isn't the best physics book I've read in terms of being open to all (although to Hawking he probably felt like he was writing in crayon).
