The book begins with a list of cognitive biases that lead to negative thinking, which throws the authors own errors in sharp relief. (see: psychogenetic fallacy)

On environmentalism: Environmentalists claimed acid rain would harm the environment. Legislation was enacted that mitigated harmful effects. Therefore, no need to listen to environmentalists. (see: self-defeating prophecy)

In her book This Changes Everything, Naomi Klein stated how much she disliked scientists who focused on innovation over conservation. For this reason, Klein would absolutely hate Peter Diamandis. He began his book with example after example of why we worry too much about depleting Earth's resources. He even went so far as to Kahneman shame his reader. I am as pessimistic as anyone else with an understanding of science, but the author makes many very good and rational points about how this may be the wrong view. The author has not convinced me that the end of civilization is NOT nearly guaranteed to be within the next few hundred years, but he has convinced me that an extension on the lifespan has a real (though still very small) possibility.

The original book that begat Factfulness - which was the book that Gates sent copies of to 50,000 US students. Same thesis. The world is better today than ever before. Yes: it is far from perfect. But at the same time - we are heading in right direction. Albeit slower than is ideal.

A fantastic read - and bizarre to be reading something so incredibly optimistic. Makes me think that I too should be trying to change the world - or perhaps get something else to drink. But seriously, well written with good ideas and charts and statistics.
