This has to be one of Chamberlain’s best, in my opinion. She sets the scene with ease - as uncomfortable as it gets - and does so with sensitivity and realism. I was told it’s “really good, but hard to read” and that really is an apt description. Her writing isn’t difficult - she’s mastered the craft, but as the plot unfolds, uncomfortable truths about the American south’s past are on full display.
