This has to be one of Chamberlain’s best, in my opinion. She sets the scene with ease - as uncomfortable as it gets - and does so with sensitivity and realism. I was told it’s “really good, but hard to read” and that really is an apt description. Her writing isn’t difficult - she’s mastered the craft, but as the plot unfolds, uncomfortable truths about the American south’s past are on full display. Couldn’t put this book down! All sorts of twists and turns throughout! I learned about the Scope Project within this book. This one is heartbreaking for sure but it’s very well written.
