This is such a fantastic book! I especially love how Mel tells the stories of some of his ancestors from a first person perspective.
Read this book and you’ll also really appreciate one of many quotes I love: “...believe in the greatness of this country based on hope for the future, and try not to focus on the history of the past.” That’s only a partial quote, but I believe it conveys the hopeful optimism of this story despite the hardships it describes, especially early on. I am the author of this book, but going back and reading it again after publication was a different experience. Obviously, I thought the story was fascinating, but it seemed like I had been writing while in an out-of-body experience, channeling my ancestors to speak in their voices for each chapter. Reading it made me feel like a reader, not the writer.

An excellent account of one man's family history, from slavery to the present day. A wonderfully told narrative that brings the characters to life. Very relevant to today's increasing consciousness of the injustices of the past and our need to still seek justice and our common humanity in our own day. I highly recommend this book!
