“Townie” is a memoir by Andre Dubus III in which he describes his life-long struggles. Andre writes of his hardships growing up in poverty and in a chaotic single-parent household in Haverhill, MA. Andre is bullied and succumbs to the social pressures of drugs but is able to find his passion for boxing and bodybuilding. Later in his life, he finds writing helps him express himself and understand his relationships and family dynamics. Writing also helps him develop a more meaningful relationship

Townie is a sad but inspiring book embedded with conflict and the overcoming of obstacles. Following his parent’s divorce, Andre and his family find themselves living in a drug-ridden and impoverished area in Massachusetts where he often finds himself in trouble. However, Andre learned to escape the pain, violence, and trouble by learning to fight as well as working out and playing sports. Eventually, he takes to pen and paper and writes this moving but quite lengthy memoir.
