It's been 90 years since In Praise of Shadows was published, and already when it was written it was suffused with a melancholy and mourning for disappearing ways of seeing. Experienced today it reads like an elegy. I am a child of the West through and through, murky skin or not (—incidentally the skin color passage was where I stopped the first time I was given this essay, years ago), and I find it difficult not to feel that I am violating the sanctity of Tanizaki's aesthetic plea when I receive ...more

A lovely read, praising shadows, darkness, the dim and opaque, the subtle and hidden, with examples that sometimes surprise and sometimes open doors to the unknown (to me).
