I guessed the ending early on, but it still came us a surprise due to the authors impressive writing skills and the hyper-realistic descriptions the character experiences. I suspect the cannon-shots were his heartbeat, and the final, painful depiction at the end was his neck snapping.
I didn't find myself upset at his death, I think the short length of this piece gave the readers little in the way of an emotional connection to the man.
