First time 2020: 5 stars

Honestly, just watch the movie first.

I watched the movie before reading City of bones and I still wasn't spoiled for anything.

Many things were different and even the people who read the book wouldn't understand what was happening at the very end of the movie.

BUT, it does an amazing job in the settings and places.

What I mean is that if you see the movie first, you just simply enjoy the book more.

So, I have a couple thoughts on this book.
First of all, the only reason I read this book was because of the hype. So many people have told me that the Shadowhunters series is among the best fantasy of all time (along with Throne of Glass and Shadow and Bone, both of which are on my to-read list currently), so I decided I should give the first book a try. I put it off for a while, though, because a) it was a large series, and I didn't want to get into a huge series like this and b) the book itse So, I have a couple thoughts on this book.
First of all, the only reason I read this book was because of the hype. So many people have told me that the Shadowhunters series is among the best fantasy of all time (along with Throne of Glass and Shadow and Bone, both of which are on my to-read list currently), so I decided I should give the first book a try. I put it off for a while, though, because a) it was a large series, and I didn't want to get into a huge series like this and b) the book itself didn't really appeal to me. It sounded not my type, but now I had the time because of lockdown and I was in a fantasy phase (i.e. read the Cruel Prince, the Shadows Between Us, A Court of Thorns and Roses, the Star-Touched Queen, and a LOT more) so I was like, okay I will finally try to attempt at this book. Now on to the actual review.

The beginning was really boring. I found myself pushing through to get to the interesting part, which in my opinion was in the middle, sort of how a lot of people didn't like Harry Potter at the beginning because of it's slow pace, even though it got way better later on. The middle pulled me in a lot. I reached the middle of the first day I started reading, and at night when I had to shut off, I found myself anxious for morning to continue. The book's ending was great, and the characters were to die for!!

Now, the characters I loved, but they were clique (but I don't mind as you find them in every book). Isabelle, the party girl. Clary, our main character and a mix of Feyre Archeron and Tris Prior (Tris's curiosity and Feyre's caringness of her loved ones). Alec, the protective older brother. Simon, the tag-along normal best friend who gets roped into everything. Jace, the too-cool-for-school handsome hero love interest. And then there were the backstabbing characters and the backstabbing at first but later revealed good characters and the all-around good background characters. Also, Valerian, the opposite of Voldemort but equally evil. So yeah, that is your overview of the characters, and despite their cliqueness, I liked them.

Other reviews say the whole thing is copied. I say, some of it might be copied and jumbled up to not look like a copy. The reason why I saw this is because no, the characters personally don't seem copied, but the types of people in the story seemed taken from other books a little bit. Vampires and werewolves hate each other? Twilight (I haven't even read Twilight and I know it's from that book). Faeries, pixies, and warlocks, and in their courts? A Court of Thorns and Roses. (basically the whole Faerie book genre) Angels and demons? Supernatural. I could go on and there is a possibility that I'm wrong about all this, but this is just my opinion.

Last note: I hated Simon throughout the whole dang book. He clung on to clary even though he knew she's in love with Jace, and he pushed his feelings on her. He kept getting in trouble, and was rude to all of Clary's friends for absolutely no reason! He was definitely my least favorite character in the entire book.

No matter what I've said, I still loved the book for some reason and will definitely reading the second book in the series after this. Read the book if you are considering!! ...more

So, before anyone slaps me in the face for my review, I'd like to point out a minor error in the book that reaaaally bothered me: the Roman saying goes "Dura lex, sed lex", not "sed lex, dura lex". Sed means "being" in latin, and dura means "hard", so if you want to say "the law is hard, but is the law", you have to say it the first way, not the latter. It's not really an important detail, but when I saw it, I had to fight the urge to throw the book against the wall.
