Are the drow laughably evil, to the point of parody? Yes.
Is there weird fantasy early 90s incest? Also yes.
But it is cool to see a fleshed-out drow society and our gentle boi who befriends a magic cat.

Perusing the reviews of the various D’rizzt books, there is a consensus that the Dark Elf Trilogy, which is the prequel series to the earlier published Icewind Dale Trilogy, was one of the best. Having finished Book I - Homeland, I agree.

This is my favorite book series ever. I’m working on my second read through of the series and falling in love with it all over again. I love Drizzt Do’Urden and I love the drow and learning about their complex society.
I enjoyed it more than I expected. It's a bit hard to follow all the constant POV swaps, and I'm not hugely invested in Drizzt quite yet, but the story was good.
