I knew this was gonna go big the moment I read the blurb, I remember rush reading the book I was reading at the time because I was so looking forward to this one! I really couldn't take my eyes off the pages!

Ah-hem! So, when I started reading this book, Katniss' character immediately felt real. With her family's daily struggle to survive Katniss is forced to hunt in the surrounding forest which is highly illegal in District 12 the poorest district in Panem. Katniss has learnt her wilderness knowledge from her father who was killed in a coal mining accident. I loved the part where against all odds Prim Katniss' younger sister's name is pulled out of the Reaping and Katniss immediately voluteers as tribute.

Katniss' feelings in those moments training in the Capitol are what confused me. How can she (or anyone else for that matter) be so calm and collected knowing she could be killed in a couple days time?? I also didn't understand why she liked her prep team so much cause as Gail said in a later book "..they prettied you up for slaughter." Something else that mystified me was the appearance of an Avox girl whom Katniss saw in the forest trying supposedly to escape from the Capitol a few years back.
The Avox girl and Katniss developed a sort of friendship and I believed at the time this Avox girl would play a part with Katniss in the next installment.

In the Launch Room before the Games Katniss' true fears emerge. At last!
Once in the Arena things really begin to speed up action-wise.

There was plenty of fighting and gore, and I found the parts about Rue really sad although I saw them coming in a way...
Katniss handled every situation very well, but it still shocks me that anyone would enjoy watching the death and suffering of children. Of course for an epic book there was an epic ending which met up to ALL (if not more) of my expectations, so anyone out there who hasn't tried this series hasn't lived. I've got to say I found this book shocking (but that's because I was soft back then and new to fiction) when I read the blurb but when I started reading I was immersed in Katniss' world. There was the promise that Katniss' hunger games were going to be very different... Plus there's also the love triangle with Peeta, Gail and Katniss... And for once I'll refrain from leaving any spoilers! ...more

I tore through the book in three days. I thought it would be a arduous read cause I had seen the movie and basically know what is happening. But to my surprise, I find myself unable to stop reading. This was literally a "page-turner" for me.

Initially I was put off by the perspective of writing- it is written from the perspective of the protagonist. So anything that the protagonist does is actually narrated in her own words to us; for eg.

I really liked this series. Very, very addicting and very, very good. I liked how the main character wasn't...perfect, on purpose almost. Katniss is rude, violent and a terrible friend, even though she's the main character. What a cool idea. My favourite character is Peeta because he's such a good person. I also like Effie, Prim, Haymitch, Cinna, and Buttercup. ...more
