I've always loved Lord of the Rings. In fact, the only thing I don't like, is how large the paragraphs are. Makes it hard to stop and find your place after (grr) interruptions. The history of Middle-earth is complex and well-thought-out, the characters have distinct personalities, and the world itself is vivid and easy to 'see.'
