What Members Thought

On a Stormy Primeval Shore is a welcome addition to the Canadian Historical Brides series. Its setting is the late eighteenth century, when Nova Scotia is broken into two provinces and New Brunswick is born. Why? The American Revolution has just ended and land is needed for both fleeing American Loyalists and soldiers of the Crown. Into the fray comes Amelia Latimer, daughter of the fort’s captain, fresh from England and ready to marry one of her father’s colleagues. Amelia is a heroine in the J

Amelia Latimer is a feisty lady who will not be told what to do. She follows her heart and finds her own way in a new world filled with conflict. Loyalists on the run from America flood into Canada, pushing out the French who had been there years prior. The cultures snap at each other but Amelia does not care. Against her English father’s wishes, she falls in love and marries a Frenchman.

I wrote this novel to add to the series, Canadian Historical Brides, in honor of Canada's 150th birthday. I loved learning the history of New Brunswick, with the help of Nancy Bell, and turning it into a romantic adventure. An Englishwoman who comes to wed a soldier, rejects him, and falls for a dashing Acadian man, who is struggling to keep his trading post out of a villain's hands.

I love the characters and I cheered for Amelia, a proper Englishwoman, and Gilbert, a roguish Acadian trader whose mother fled to avoid deportation.
Amelia sailed from England to what would become Canada to marry a man chosen by her father, but she had the courage to choose love over conventions, saw the birth of a new province, and found her rightful place in this wild country where men and women fight to build new lives.
Very enjoyable read!
