ETA: So I really enjoyed this book, but other readers have pointed out the ways that it is antagonistic to trans, non-binary, ace, aro, and disabled readers, which I think is important to be aware of. DNF @ 60%.
I love the worldbuilding, but there's just nothing happening in this book, except for people talking about and explaining things. Just characters telling each other about the world, but since they do nothing, I don't really know who they are and why I should care about them. It's all tell, don't show and sadly, I did not enjoy one chapter of it.
Two stars for the worldbuilding, which is, as I said, excellent. ...more

Slice of life Firefly fanfiction, with more aliens. Essentially. I was pretty okay with this for a while, but eventually it started to grate on me. Everyone is quirky and loving and doesn't necessarily respect boundaries, and honestly - I wouldn't ACTUALLY want to spend that much time with these people. There is the Designated Jerk character, who is persnickety (as his job requires him to be), and apparently that makes it cool that his shipmates smoke around him (they don't believe he's allergic

This was a different kind of science-fiction, quite enjoyable and focused on the characters and human interactions.
I reread this in my buddy reads group, but my opinion is unchanged. While this was an entertaining book, some things sounded too naive and unrealistic for me to wrap my GenX experienced mind around and for this reason I don't think I am the right audience for Becky Chamber's books. I am not continuing this series since I preffer other kinds of space opera more. ...more

I really loved this book! It has some of the greatest characters I’ve read about in a long time. They are so well written and have a lot of depth and heart. I loved the diverse species and the ‘lived-in’ feel of this world. These are people you’d want to hang out with on a spaceship. It was so fun to take a trip with them.

Loved every second reading it. It's both so warm and heart-wrenching. A lesson on acceptance love and boundaries.

This was lovely. It's sci-fi that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy when you read it.
