A competently crafted urban fantasy complete with all the tropes: spunky girl fighting against ____, trying to survive the strangeness of a city that is alive, with powerful guy as partner, in business and--probably--eventually also in romance.
The background is reasonably interesting: magic coming back into the world, where people either are magic users or compensate with cybernetics. Dragons exist as uber-beautiful, powerful beings. Gods abound. But upon closer look, I can see plot con ...more

Fun but lacks that added extra that would make this a keeper. There's a lot of world-building, and the characters are more archetypes than fully-fleshed, interesting individuals. (When we meet a colleague of Opal's who is described as having gray eyes and wearing a bomber jacket, is he going to be the Hot Mysterious Frenemy? Do I really need to answer that?) The McGuffin here is also just... very McGuffin-y, unfortunately; it felt silly once all was revealed, like, "All this is about that?"
