I enjoyed this quite a lot. As I get older I more and more enjoy viewpoint characters who are old and grumpy and have Had Enough Of This Shit. I also like seeing young fumbling nitwit ensemble characters viewed through old fogies' eyes. The interplay between the primary antagonist and the unpredictable third party--the Falcon Prince--made for an excellently unsettled three-way final conflict, which worked extremely well, and the ending was satisfying both politically and also personally. Previous write-ups promised a swashbuckling fantasy romp, and Throne of the Crescent Moon did not disappoint. For those who like action, but with a bit of character and world-building thrown into the mix, Ahmed's writing delivers on all three counts.

I found myself enjoying the latter half of the book more, possibly because of the introduction of a pair of POV characters I connected with a bit better, but the whole novel was well-written and fun. The ending moved me without being unnecessarily ...more

This book was a lot of fun, and I loved reading fantasy inspired by middle eastern culture. This book really captured the feel of the culture too, from the mythology to the food to the customs. I also loved the diversity of the characters and I thought the women were written rather well.

All in all, this was an excellent debut novel and I can't wait to read the next book in the series when it comes out! ...more
