I was very excited to read this book mainly because the movie is supposed to be amazing but after finishing it I can tell that it's a lot different from the movie (even though I have not watched it). For one thing, the characters are depicted as much more grown up than they are in the books and for another, it's just a totally different plot lol.

The book is aimed at children so naturally we find a number of lessons embedded throughout the books. While most of them are truly very important, they I was very excited to read this book mainly because the movie is supposed to be amazing but after finishing it I can tell that it's a lot different from the movie (even though I have not watched it). For one thing, the characters are depicted as much more grown up than they are in the books and for another, it's just a totally different plot lol.

The book is aimed at children so naturally we find a number of lessons embedded throughout the books. While most of them are truly very important, they are also coloured by the era in which the book was written. A modern person might not find them instructive at all but that being said there are a lot of good things to be said about the book, the character growth being one of them. By the end of the book, we find all the March sisters and to some extent everyone related to them changed for the good (for the most part).

The plot, naturally, deals with subjects such as growing up, letting go and the sufferings of an adult life. As the March sisters grow, they begin to realise that there is a lot more to life than their own self and that, I suppose, is a great lesson if not taught in absolute relation to religion. Maybe it's my personal prejudice against it, but that did not sit well with me. Apart from that, the plot was truly compelling, at times made me contemplative about our own society, provided moments of hilarity and also poignancy. (Btw, don't think much about the spoilers from Friends. They aren't really spoilers.)

Among the characters, my favourite was probably Mrs March and Jo, both of whom are admirable characters and while the latter has a lot of growth (though I am not sure how I feel about the end result), the former acts as a constant helpful guide to her children. The other characters were a little eh for me though all of them suffer through their own hardships.

If nothing else, this book gives you a sense of warmth and happiness with its cozy household setting and familial love. It was a fresh retreat from my gothic horror reads (although I did plunge straight into Dorian Gray after but that's another matter.)

Este libro es muy bonito, la verdad. No tiene una historia compleja ni nada por el estilo, simplemente es el relato de una familia, principalmente de cuatro hermanas Jo, Beth, Amy y Meg, las cuales viven sus sueños, dolores, enfermedades, miedos, ambiciones, el amor, el desamor y la vida de casados. Me pareció una historia muy bonita. Esta se desarrolla entre los años 1860 y 1870.
