I had so much hope and excitement about this book. I was like there’s a fantasy that’s inspired by India, it’s going to be amazing, it’s going to be my next favorite book, and unfortunately I was quite disappointed. In the beginning I thought because of the sporadic way I was reading the book I wasn’t giving it a fair chance (I thought the writing was bland, I was just really bored with the plot), but about halfway in I started reading the book consistently and still just wasn’t loving it.

I think a big reason why I didn’t care for the book was because of the characters. Usually if I love the characters, even if the plot is mediocre, I’ll enjoy the book overall. If I’m being completely honest, Gul’s character just got on my nerves. I get that she was supposed to be this young girl who’s been through some trauma and is very stubborn, snarky, and prideful BUT she was just so annoying. I just could not deal with it. So many things that happened in the story could have been prevented if she just hadn’t lost her temper (which happened literally all the time, she couldn’t hold her tongue for the life of her). That’s cool if you like characters like that, and I guess the author was trying to paint her as morally grey or something, however, she just had so little substance to her. All she was was this naïve girl who wanted to kill the king, but also got easily side tracked and did stupid things? Like? I thought that I would like Cavas’ character, but he was also just not fully fleshed out. Don’t even get me started on the insta love. The two of them didn’t even have any connection, I have no clue why they liked each other.

I’m a little heated haha, so let me tell you something I appreciated: the Indian representation. I liked the way food and clothing and the different locations the characters traveled to described. The author definitely did this justice.

Besides that, I wasn’t a big fan of the writing style. It was just okay. I’m not sure if it was that or the plot, but everything felt so convoluted and dragged out. All the action was at the very end and most of the book was just a big lead up to that point. At the fifty percent mark I was just so bored. I didn’t even care that there were so many tropes in this book, I just felt like it could have been executed better and then I would have enjoyed it so much more. With that being said, I am thinking about reading the second book only because I’m curious about Shayla’s character (might be the most interesting character in the book not going to lie) and if there will be more development of the characters. We’ll see though, it depends on if I want to give this series a chance. Stay tuned!
