Plato the aficionado of Socrates and the tutor of Aristotle is one of the superlative philosophers produced by ancient Greece. Through much of what he said and wrote is no more existing, yet the limited material which has come down to us throws a deluge of light on his work, philosophy and time. Plato adopted the method of dialogues and lectures to propound his philosophy.

He was one of the greatest logicians and dialecticians of the' west and tried to eradicate the prevailing false beliefs and Plato the aficionado of Socrates and the tutor of Aristotle is one of the superlative philosophers produced by ancient Greece. Plato’s Republic is one of those works in the history of philosophy that is both markedly familiar and inexhaustibly puzzling. It has been studied endlessly by a wide range of readers, specialists and amateurs alike, and has become a canonical document of Western civilization.

The Republic is Plato’s most widespread dialogue, and regardless of the hoary quarrel between philosophy and poetry, the presentation of that squabble takes place in an idiom that coalesces both sides of the human spirit.

The Republic is not a treatise on politics but a dramatic portrait of people conversing about the connection between justice and the good.

Plato attached great importance the conception of justice is evident from the fact that he subtitled book Republic as 'Concerning Justice'. In fact the discovery of nature and habitation of justice is the fundamental issue of Republic. At the outset it may be pointed out that to the Greeks the term “just” carried wider implications than the word justice actually connoted.

While explaining his theory of justice, Plato starts by discussing the various prevailing theories of justice and after rejecting them he puts forward his own views.

The Republic is in the first instance a narrated dialogue in which Socrates recounts the whole story to an unnamed audience. The atmosphere corresponds to the theme: We are in the midst of novelty, excitement, and revolution.

Just as the dramatic setting evokes the atmosphere of the glory of the Athenian democracy prior to the tyranny of the Thirty, so the discussion itself is a kind of treason against the democracy, a treason in which daring and revolutionary proposals, deeply antidemocratic, are made about the founding of the just city.

Our first inclination would be to assume that the title signifies the main theme of the work. This may need to be qualified, but it is a plausible hypothesis. If it is correct, then we can also say that the wide variety of topics in the dialogue is all presented from the standpoint of the question of the regime.
