Damn, this guy can write.
I once observed that when reading Ed's account of hiking the North Rim Trail I actually saw more than I did when I hiked it myself. I had a hard time with this book as it was my 1st Abbey read. It sat by the toilet for months with a few pages read per sitting [literally]. When I hit the Down the River chapter [page 151] something happened. I got it.

This is one of the best books I've read. Abbey has a great talent for mixing nature, anthropology, adventure, and civil disobedience. Everyone should read this book. It changed the way I look at the world.

I just finished reading this book for the fifth time. I first read it back in 1985. Desert Solitaire is still my all time favorite book. Other than reading books to my kids, this is the book I have read most.
Ed's irreverent attitude and view on nature gave voice to my own leanings of the natural world and the best way for humans to walk this planet. He made me love the Moab area before ever setting food in the red rock, a love affair that has drawn me to this gnarled desert at least 6 times wit ...more
