What Members Thought

It took me exactly two chapters to get invested in the story, but after that I literally gobbled this book. The characters were all well portrayed and watching Alina develop through the course of the story was amazing. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Alina and the Darkling even if it lasted for a very short span of time. I did think that the Darkling was cunning and transparent but I had a glimmering hope that he would eventually come around. But I guess I was wrong.

I finished this last night, and to be honest I expected a lot worse after all I’ve heard about it. It was actually a good book, definitely not the best but it wasn’t bad? far better than I expected.
I thought this was a great introduction to the Grisha world, the world building was really good and I love how the magic is divided. It’s not the most action packed book, like the plot wasn’t that fast paced and sometimes not much was happening but I didn’t ...more

After discovering she has special powers, Alina Starkov is taken away to train to join the magical elite led by the Darkling, where she tries to adjust to her new life.
I enjoyed this book, the Grishaverse world and magic system were both really cool, and I liked the setting of the story with the idea of the Shadow Fold. The story was interesting, and I thought the magic in the world was really fascinating.

I'm going to give it 3.5 stars, and why, you may ask? Because: * (NON-SPOILER apart from the marked area)
1) It was just too cliche, I felt like I had seen it all before.
2) I actually had to physically put it down and SIGH at certain points, that's how I felt at those bits like PLEASE SAVE ME.
3) There were some good bits that I enjoyed that were scattered throughout the book.
4) I still have no idea who to ship with Alina (lol my fandom heart is showing) and am leaning heavily on her staying sing ...more
