What Members Thought

part one of my grishaverse reread (and continuation) completed!
so if you read my pre-review, you would know i was very scared that i would hate the book and i'm glad to say i didn't! i believe i gave this five stars when i initially read it (but based on the enjoyment i felt then, i feel i would've given it four stars now, if that makes any sense) but now i would give it a healthy 3.5/5 stars. bordering between mediocre and good, which makes sense with my reading drastically changing over six ...more

Although it’s only February, I think it’s safe to say this book will be one of my favorites for this year. This novel is reaching its ninth birthday, yet the concept remains fresh and exciting. So glad I finally get the hype! Can’t wait to read the others!!

After discovering she has special powers, Alina Starkov is taken away to train to join the magical elite led by the Darkling, where she tries to adjust to her new life.
I enjoyed this book, the Grishaverse world and magic system were both really cool, and I liked the setting of the story with the idea of the Shadow Fold. The story was interesting, and I thought the magic in the world was really fascinating.

I connected very well with Alina, probably because it was written in her perspective. But I didn't connect well with the male characters.
I would have loved to see more of Genya and Feydor. The twists woul ...more

I'd say this is a 3,5 stars for me. It had it's moments but at certain points I think the story lacked something and some things felt pretty rushed. I think I would have enjoyed this more though if I had read this when I was younger. But I'm reading the next parts too. And can't wait to get to Six of Crows, have heard it's much better!
