What Members Thought

I actually really enjoyed this! I mostly bought it because it's gorgeous and it's part of the beautiful Puffin in Bloom collection (yes, I'm that kind of reader -ugh, so superficial), but I ended up loving it. It's always interesting to read books that you wouldn't normally pick up. Little Women is an interesting way to dive into another time, where women had different purposes and were expected to behave in certain ways. Happy to live in 2016 (2017 almost), but really interesting to read this.

3.5/5. I think it's a classic for a reason, since there are parts that still hold up very well now, but there were also parts that reflected the spirit of that time a lot, which quite irritated me. I did like the story, at times, and I'm very curious about the upcoming film :)

Started reading this book again because of a group read and very fond memories.
In the beginning some adjusting was required. This story has a very different pacing and build-up as contemporary stories and I was first shocked at how often the words queer and gay were used. But this book was obviously this book was written before (homo)sexuality came with a bunch of labels. Because of this, it was refreshing and sometimes frustrating experience.
...more

I have some conflicting feelings on this one.. It’s a sweet book and should of course be seen as a product of it’s time. Sure, children’s classics tend to be somewhat moralising and usually I don’t mind (I mean I looooove Anne of Green Gables) but this was just of the charts preachy with very little plot... The fact that the original title was ‘Little Women and Good Wives’ probably should have tipped me of; and it was exactly the ‘be a good little christian wife’ nonsense that really got on my n
