This book is trying to do a lot. It is part comedy (a fairly dark humor, but funny nonetheless), part mystery, part social commentary. It does none of these things well. There are excellent scenes but overwhelmingly I felt disappointed by this book. Much of the story, but specifically the ending, fell flat because it was not clear what the author was going for--some parts "had the cadence of a joke" but were so off-putting or just not funny at all that I couldn't figure it out.

A fictional story born in the mind of the author after visiting India and meeting women in many of the same roles as the women written into this book.
It is very much in tribute to the life of India's true Bandit Queen, Phoolan Devi.
For me, the entire book centers on this one sentence from the author's notes: That Phoolan's life was "an inspiration to any woman seeking to make her own choices in a world where she is told---and her circumstances consistently confirm---that men will make her choice

Geeta's husband walked out on her 5 years ago but everyone in her village believes she killed him and she lives apart from others who have cast her as a witch. Really, really slow start - if I hadn't been doing this on audiobook I probably would have DNF'd - but very entertaining by the end. Lots of dark humor, and some great banter. It's a good one, but only if you have patience. ...more
